The Youth Law Center (YLC) welcomes nominations for cy pres awards. Cy pres awards allow unclaimed settlement funds from class-action suits to be distributed to nonprofit organizations, and California law specifically identifies “child advocacy programs” as appropriate cy pres recipients. (CCP §384(b)).
YLC is an ideal organization to direct cy pres awards. We are a nonprofit legal organization that works to protect children in the nation's foster care and juvenile justice systems from abuse and neglect, and to ensure that these children receive the necessary support and services to become healthy and productive adults. Since 1978 we have provided national leadership on child welfare and juvenile justice law and system reform issues. We:
Advocate on the local, state, and national level to ensure that foster care and juvenile justice systems protect and support the children they serve.
Collaborate with public agencies, private providers, and other key stakeholders to improve child welfare and justice system policies and practices.
Educate policy makers, service providers, public officials, system personnel, youth, families, and communities regarding the plight and rights of children in state custody.
Litigate when necessary to bring about system change.
Disseminate publications, fact sheets, training curricula, pleadings, briefs, and other resources developed in our advocacy efforts.
Since 1978, our lawyers have worked across the country to reduce the use of out-of-home care and incarceration; ensure safe and humane conditions in out-of home placements; keep children out of adult jails; and secure equitable treatment for children in both systems. Our efforts have focused on strengthening families, and we advocate for education, medical and mental health, legal support, and transition services needed to assure children's success in care and in the community. We fight for increased accountability of the juvenile justice and child welfare systems, champion professional and public education, ensure that children have access to justice, and vindicate the rights of vulnerable children.
YLC is highly qualified to administer cy pres funds to advocate for poor and underserved children. For additional information, contact YLC at (415) 543-3379 ext. 3913, or rbishop@ylc.org.
