Housing Support & Homelessness Prevention

In recognition of the critical nature of stable housing as not only a human right but also as a basic need for transition aged youth, the Youth Law Center partners with legal services providers, youth, agencies and other advocacy organizations to support housing access for systems-involved young people and their families.

Recently this work has included providing training and advocacy support related to the unique housing rights and benefits applicable to systems-involved young people to a variety of stakeholders, working with foster care, juvenile justice and housing stakeholders to increase access to and utilization of transitional housing programs and specific housing voucher programs for transition aged foster youth; beginning work to develop resources specific to disaster planning, ensuring housing stability and access to resources for systems-impacted youth and their families; and working with legal services, providers, and other stakeholders  to improve access to supportive services for transition aged youth that increase the likelihood of these young people obtaining and retaining housing, including access to public benefits, health and mental health care, and legal services.
