Unsung Heroes
The Loren Warboys Unsung Hero Awards honor the legacy of our first managing director, Loren Warboys. Loren’s expertise and commitment to advocacy for children in the juvenile justice system, particularly in the areas of education and mental health services, was unparalleled. A founding staff member, Loren worked at the Youth Law Center from 1979 until his untimely death from leukemia in 1999.

In Memoriam
Loren Warboys was a staff attorney for the Youth Law Center from 1979-1994, and the managing director from 1994 until his untimely passing in 1999. Among the groundbreaking cases he led during his career were Willie M. vs. Hunt, which established the rights of children in North Carolina to adequate, community-based mental health treatment, and Nick O. vs. Terhune, which restructured special education services in the California Youth Authority.
