Weathers v. Leidig was a federal civil rights class action challenging the confinement of juveniles in the county jail for subjecting them to cruel, unconscionable and illegal conditions of confinement; placing status offenders and other juveniles who presented no danger to themselves or others in secure confinement cells; failing to separate juveniles adequately from adult offenders; and failing to provide them with detention homes or other appropriate community-based alternatives to placement in county jails. As a result of the lawsuit, juveniles are no longer held in the county jail and juvenile detention services are provided for all delinquents, traffic, or fish and game law violators.
