Now is the Time to Re-envision Extended Foster Care

We hope you will take a look at Extended Foster Care Works: Why Implementation Makes All The Difference. This article highlights the positive impact that extended foster care has had in the lives of young people across the country and the great need for improvements in how the program is implemented. 

The article elevates three critical elements in implementation efforts: (1) stable and appropriate housing, (2) relationship-based support through family, peers, community, and professionals; and (3) a focus on connections to meaningful employment and education opportunities and support. 

We agree that now is the time to re- envision how extended foster care can ensure that young adults are equipped to live a future in which they can flourish economically, experience health and wellness, and can rely on access to critical resources like relationships, housing and income. Youth Law Center’s report, On the Threshold of Change: Forces that could transform future conditions for youth in Extended Foster Care (EFC),  provides a framework to envision and take action to create an extended foster care that all young people deserve.
