YLC Honors Unsung Heroes on December 8, 2014

Each year the Youth Law Center recognizes people who have made a difference in the lives of our clients during the past year at its Loren Warboys Unsung Heroes Reception.  This year’s honorees have helped improve the lives of children and youth involved in the nation’s foster care and justice systems.  It is our pleasure to honor:

  • Kathryn Dresslar.  Kathy is the Chief of Staff for Darrell Steinberg, President Pro Tempore of the California State Senate.  For over a decade, Kathy has been a driving force behind much of the groundbreaking policy to protect the rights and improve the lives of youth in the child welfare and juvenile justice system.  Her leadership and belief in the humanity and potential of children in government care has inspired hundreds of legislators, staffers, and professionals.
  • Dave Maass.  Dave is a media relations coordinator and investigative researcher at the Electronic Frontier Foundation in San Francisco.   In 2012, while working as a reporter for the San Diego City Beat, his in-depth reporting on San Diego County’s use of pepper spray in juvenile detention centers led to YLC’s investigation of pepper spray in the facilities, and ultimately, to YLC’s complaint to the Department of Justice in July, 2014.  His articles were courageous, insightful and well-researched.
  • Gretchen Test.  Gretchen is a Senior Associate with the Child Welfare Strategy Group of the Annie E. Casey Foundation.  During the past decade, Gretchen has worked with YLC on many projects to increase the permanency and well-being of youth in the child welfare system through promoting our core values such as applying child development principles to child welfare practice, reducing the use of institutional care, and ensuring quality families for every child.  Gretchen will receive the Tom Welch Award, in memory of YLC’s friend and former Board chair.
