YLC Presents on Trauma and the Environment of Care

YLC Staff Attorney Sue Burrell spoke at a Roundtable on “Current Issues and New Directions in Creating Trauma-Informed Juvenile Justice Systems,” sponsored by the National Child Traumatic Stress Network.  The Roundtable took place February 11 and12, 2013, in Los Angeles, and was attended by some 50 researchers, clinicians and advocates working on the issue of trauma-informed care in juvenile justice.   Other invited guests spoke on family involvement, disproportionate minority involvement, assessment, and crossover youth in relation to trauma and youth in juvenile justice.  Sue spoke about the “Environment of Care” in juvenile facilities.  She spoke of the traumatic impact of incarceration itself, and the need to scrutinize every aspect of institutional operations to reduce further trauma (including intake, training, use of force, and solitary confinement).  In conjunction with the Roundtable, Sue developed a brief on “Environment of Care” which will be finalized soon.
